In the past 5 to 10 years, Wai said, there were about 10 established brands in the Malaysian commercial tyre market. These brands have lost their market share to the budget and private brands that have ac- counted for 50 per cent or more of the to- tal market share.
“The budget and private brands are mainly brought in by trading companies. These players do not have long-term plans and commitment. They do not care about the quality of products, sales channels and services. If they fail, they would leave the market and probably come back again with        that are attracted by the tyre pricing that is lower than the market price would buy from them. While budget tyres may seem like a bargain, they may not really save you much money in the long run. What really matter is the vehicle’s overall tyre cost per km.”
Wai revealed that the approach that Giti Tire Malaysia takes is laying down the ground work. “Our well-trained sales team visit the fleet companies, strengthen their knowledge on the tyres, help them to monitor and man-
age their tyres, as well as their opera- tional costs.”
   
Giti Tire Malaysia, he said, sees business opportunity amidst the Covid-19 pan- demic. “We consider our product as tier 2 in terms of pricing but with tier 1 product quality. Fleet companies are looking at ways to save costs due to the impact of the pandemic, and this is certainly a good opportunity for us. Our sales team is able          occupied because of the slow-down of their business. After trying our products for 6 to 9 months, they discovered that they are just as good as the premium brands that they were using or even better.”
Unlike some major tyre manufacturers that have second or parallel brands to meet the various market needs under their umbrel- la, Giti has only one brand, Wai explained. This, he stressed, is one of the strongest advantages of the company – one brand with one quality. Furthermore, he said, Giti’s strong casings are built for being re- treaded, one or multiple times depending on user conditions.
“Today, the technology gap between the top 10 commercial tyre brands is ex- tremely narrow. In order to stay resilient and relevant in the highly competitive market place, Giti has expanding its re- mit from solely being a tyre manufacturer to becoming a solution provider before branching out to better support the truck- ing industry. In line with this goal, our two distributors, Kit Loong Commercial Tyre Sdn Bhd and Fineguard Industries Sdn Bhd are both one-stop solution provid- ers. Both of them operate workshops, 24/7 tyre rescue services, and are able to provide tyre management and retreading service to help our customers to extend their tyre life and reduce tyre costs.”
