The Michelin Primacy 5 has an 18% longer lifespan than its predecessor. It allows drivers to travel 7,000 km more than the Primacy 4+.
The Michelin Primacy 5 Will Be Available in 87 Sizes by 2025
Michelin has unveiled its latest innovation, the Primacy 5, a tyre that sets new standards for performance and sustainability. With an 18% longer lifespan compared to its predecessor, the Primacy 4+, this new generation tyre delivers durability while maintaining high safety standards on wet surfaces, whether new or worn.
Designed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving automotive market, the Primacy 5 is tailored for internal combustion engine (ICE), electric (EV), and hybrid vehicles. Its energy efficiency has improved by 5%, making it a fitting addition to Michelin’s “All Sustainable” strategy, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of its products.
The key to the Primacy 5’s performance is a patented tread pattern that enhances water evacuation with deeper channels and next-generation functional elastomers. These innovations result in a 4% improvement in braking performance on wet roads, earning the tyre an A rating under European standards. Beyond safety, the Primacy 5’s durability allows drivers to travel approximately 7,000 km (4,350 miles) further than with its predecessor, ensuring reliability from the first to the last legal mile.
This extended lifespan is particularly significant as heavier vehicles, such as electric and hybrid models, place greater demands on tyres. Despite these challenges, the Primacy 5 retains its high performance and reduces environmental impact by 6% over its lifecycle, according to Michelin’s life cycle assessment (LCA).
In addition to safety and longevity, the Primacy 5 addresses the growing consumer demand for quieter, more comfortable rides—especially for electric vehicles. Its optimised tread block and sipe design reduce both interior and exterior noise levels, enhancing the driving experience for everyday commutes and long-distance journeys alike.
Michelin’s commitment to sustainability is evident in every stage of Primacy 5’s development. Each new tyre is required to outperform its predecessor in terms of efficiency and environmental impact. The Primacy 5 achieves this with a combination of improved rolling resistance and enhanced lifespan, key factors contributing to its reduced environmental footprint.
This tyre is designed to accommodate the diverse needs of modern drivers, seamlessly integrating advanced technology to support a wide range of vehicles, from traditional combustion engines to electric and hybrid powertrains. Its balanced performance ensures that drivers can focus on their journey, regardless of their vehicle type.
“In this way, the Group is developing a global tyre approach for vehicles and allowing its customers to choose their tyres in accordance with their needs and not the vehicle’s power source,” Michelin wrote in an official statement.
The Michelin Primacy 5 will be available in 87 sizes by 2025, with 64 sizes launching in Europe this January and 149 dimensions planned by mid-2026. The tyre will also debut in Asia and other regions by March 2025.
