The Region Two Marine Police Force (PPM) seized 727 tyres of various types worth more than RM690,000.
Two Suspects Arrested for Smuggling Tyres
It was reported by The Star that the Region Two Marine Police Force (PPM) seized 727 tyres worth about RM690,000, believed to have been smuggled into the country from Singapore, at the Kempas Toll Plaza last week.
Johor Police Chief Comm Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said that the Marine Police Region 2 has arrested a 56-year-old local man and seized the tyres at the Kempas Toll Plaza on 28th October.
“While monitoring the entry and exit point of Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex, the police spotted a lorry that was moving suspiciously. They followed the lorry and found the tyres that were believed to have been smuggled in from Singapore.”
He revealed that they are collaborating with Customs Department to investigate the incident.
After the first successful arrest, he continued with the arrest of a second suspect, aged 28-years-old. The suspect was caught the following day by the Johor Bahru North D9 Special Investigation branch at Taman Sri Skudai. According to the Johor Police Chief Comm, the police believe this person is in charge of managing the delivery of untaxed tyres from Singapore to Malaysia.
He said that the lorry driver was remanded for seven days starting from 29th October until 4th November while the second suspect was remanded for two days from 30th Oct until 31st October with the case being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
